ROSIE MOLINARY
INTERNATIONALIST BOOKS—What's it like growing up in two cultures, the one at home and the one everywhere else around you? Rosie Molinary's ethnography Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina looks to more than 500 women with roots from all over Central and South America to figure out how young American Latinas deal with the inherent pressures of living under two sets of cultural expectations. Molinary, who now lives in Davidson, N.C., was the first generation in her Puerto Rican family to be born in the United States. She supplements the profiles of Latina women with her own stories to evoke discussion on what it means to be Latina in the midst of American standards of beauty and body image, and how such standards influence ethnic and sexual identity. The reading and signing begin at 7 p.m. Molinary also reads at the Regulator in Durham Thursday, June 28, at 7 p.m. —Sarah Lupton
