KATE BLACKWELL
QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC—Kate Blackwell's You Won't Remember This is a collection of short stories you won't be likely to forget, actually. Written over the span of 20 years, the North Carolina native's 12 stories elegantly capture the melancholy of life in the South; her wry and delicate storytelling has drawn comparisons to Flannery O'Connor for the harsh but sympathetic honesty that allows humor and tragedy to coincide within her work. The reading and signing will begin at 7 p.m. Visit quailridgebooks.booksense.com to learn more. —Sarah Lupton

THE ELEPHANT MAN
COMMON GROUND THEATRE—There was never a patient in the annals of 19th-century medicine like the "Elephant Man." Born at the start of the Civil War, John Merrick soon captured the fears and morbid curiosities of Americans as his physical appearance became increasingly deformed. The Delta Boys will perform Bernard Pomerance's play, The Elephant Man, which tells the story of Merrick's encounter with a young surgeon and the tightrope of sanity that Merrick was forced to navigate. The play runs tonight through July 15. Tickets are $10. For more info, visit www.cgtheatre.com/events or call 259-0812. —Megan Stein
