Chapel Hill
Everyman's Library
UNC Campus—In 1906, Joseph Malaby Dent founded Everyman's Library as a way of bringing attractively manufactured and affordable culture to the common reader. These hardback volumes were small but beautifully bound, and they remain a staple of used-book stores and ancient home libraries. The Rare Book Collection of UNC's Wilson Library has mounted a display of 107 historic Everyman's titles, including a copy of Nicholas Nickleby that was given to actor Richard Burton as a gift from his then-wife Elizabeth Taylor—who first had the book rebound in pink suede. (No word on the story behind that one.) Another relic to look for is a copy of Alice in Wonderland that was owned by the woman who inspired the tale, Alice Liddell. The exhibit is in the Melba Remig Saltarelli Exhibit Room on the third floor of Wilson Library. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. For more info, call 962-1143 or email rbcref@email.unc.edu. The show runs through March 31. —David Fellerath
