Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
  • Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band

Raleigh
REVEREND PEYTON'S BIG DAMN BAND
HIDEAWAY BBQ—A little band with an earth-rattling sound, the Reverend, brother Jayme and wife Breezy form the paradoxically named Big Damn Band. But power doesn't always come in numbers: This family resurrects and reconstructs the blues hammer of the Mississippi Delta and the edge of the Eastern Piedmont style with real grit and power. Check the slow stomp 'n' growl of "Boom Chank" for proof of power. With Bombadil at 8:30 p.m. for $8. —Kathy Justice

Chapel Hill
THE POPULAR KIDS' COMEDY
LOCAL 506—Between the band's tours for their first LP and first EP, The Rosebuds' Kelly Crisp started leading Wednesday night appearances by a comedy troupe called The Popular Kids at Kings. The Rosebuds are slowing down for the moment, and Crisp is working to split sides in New York and North Carolina. The Popular Kids—featuring Crisp, Jeramy Lowe and Josh Bryant—make their first appearance in three years tonight at 9 p.m. Cover is $4. —Grayson Currin

Carrboro
MOYA BRENNAN
CAT'S CRADLE—Moya Brennan, the Irish singer/songwriter and sister of Enya, has earned some notable titles: Grammy winner, founding member of Clannad, "first lady of Celtic music." Those words are warranted, too, as her sound mingles ambient dance grooves and Irish strings with her whisper-thin, angelic vocals. See her at 8 p.m. for $16-$18. —Kathy Justice
