A CENTURY OF POSTCARDS
UNC CAMPUS—Postcards today are a quick and easy way to tell someone you've been thinking about them. But in the early 20th century, postcards were more than that, often acting as people's only available pictures. Few people owned cameras and the newspapers did not print many pictures. Postcards have continuing archival importance in that they allow us to analyze what people of the horse-and-buggy days thought important enough to put in their photos. The Wilson Library at UNC is currently showcasing a collection of postcards from North Carolina's past, one that allows us to see our state as people did 100 years ago. Called Greetings from North Carolina: A Century of Postcards From the Durwood Barbour Collection, the exhibit is free and open to the public through Sept. 30.
