BILL BENNERS
REGULATOR BOOKSHOP—New Bern author Bill Benners will sign copies and read excerpts from his debut novel, My Sister's Keeper. Benners' mystery thriller is set in Wilmington, and features a Raleigh News & Observer reporter as heroine. The plot gets rolling when Richard, a New York photographer, heads to the N.C. coast after his reporter-sister Martha is brutally attacked. The investigation takes him to a midnight encounter with a starlet, and—perhaps in homage to Raymond Chandler's excavations of Los Angeles—Benners' novel soon moves into seamy territory, including a pornography ring that implicates the high and mighty of Wilmington. The action utilizes some of the traditionally favored locations for suspense—including the Cape Fear River, the setting for a climactic chase scene.
