The Pimps of Joytime

The Pour House—Sometimes it's OK to judge a book by its cover or a band by its name: Before you heard a single note of Black Sabbath's sludge, you didn't have to be tipped off in order to know that you'd be wading through a morass, right? So you probably don't need me to tell you that The Pimps of Joytime are totally funky. Just in case: This Brooklyn-based, Family Stone-lovin' ensemble stirs soulful vocals and organ squeals into a celebratory stew driven by worldly polyrhythms. Shake it 'til you sweat through your clothes starting at 9 p.m. Cover is $5-$7. Visit www.the-pour-house.com. —Spencer Griffith

200 Motels

Colony Theatre—How exactly does one describe a film deliberately made to defy description? Shot in less than a week and edited in less than two, Frank Zappa's directorial debut is ... a Frank Zappa film, let's put it that way. It's the sort of film where Zappa appears on camera played by Ringo Starr. Also, Keith Moon from The Who is here in a nun outfit. Including a classic animated sequence, "The Dental Hygiene Dilemma," 200 Motels is a mindblower of a flick, with tons of music, animation and very weird things happening. The urban legend that it was filmed in the same studio as 2001: A Space Odyssey is incorrect, though contemporary audiences of both films likely consumed a great deal of LSD before watching them. Cool Classics at the Colony has a new 35 mm print to help experience the madness in all its glory. The show starts at 8 p.m. for $5; for more information, call 856-0111 or visit www.therialto.com. —Zack Smith
