Eric Bachmann

Duke Gardens—We'd vowed to keep this section free of Merge Records, but if you're looking for affordable entertainment under the sky on this summer evening, there's no beating this gig (well, unless you have XX Merge tickets): With his essential Amerindie act Archers of Loaf, Eric Bachmann recorded one charging seven-inch for Merge, "What Did You Expect?," in 1994. After a trip to the majors and the end of Archers, Bachmann returned to Merge for an EP and two LPs of the moody, baroque folk-rock of Crooked Fingers. He gave his viscous baritone new space to stretch in Crooked Fingers, and he gave Merge one perfect record, Red Devil Dawn, a brooding but confident collection where slivers of light cut through a great darkness. He hasn't made anything quite like it since, but his new songs can still match the muster of his voice. Tickets are $10, $5 for Duke employees and free for students and children under 12. Music goes at 7 p.m. —Grayson Currin
