Kennedy Theater, Progress Energy Center—Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy inaugurates its 2008 summer season with Neil Simon's Rumors, a bawdy tale of four middle-aged couples whose attempted anniversary celebration devolves into chaos when farcical complexities, such as grazing gun shots and missing persons, are thrown into the mix. Reviewing the initial production, The New York Times theater critic Frank Rich noted, "Maybe I've led a charmed life, but I can't recall hearing this many toilet jokes since the ninth grade." Coming from the American playwright who delivered, among many others, The Odd Couple and The Heartbreak Kid, past productions of Rumors have been heralded for around-the-clock humor and madcap pacing that leave audiences fully entertained.
