Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3

Cat's Cradle—You just might be able to build a frame around the music of Robyn Hitchcock, a body of work alternately ornate and rustic, corners of Beatles, Byrds, Barrett and Bob. But that's the only part of his four-decade career you could nail down. Hitchcock started in The Soft Boys, mixing power pop with pyschedelia; when the lab blew up, it's possible he and the Boys invented New Wave. He's gone on to lead the Egyptians, release numerous solo recordings, and collaborate with everybody from Gillian Welch and David Rawlings to Jonathan Demme. His last couple of records have found him hanging with the Venus 3, featuring longtime fan Peter Buck and Young Fresh Fellow survivor/ Minus 5 leader Scott McCaughey. But it's as a songwriter that Hitchcock's hardest to pigeonhole. He traffics in tone poems, literary allusions, character sketches, tributes and, perhaps by accident, gorgeous love songs. And, of course, he can out-Dada They Might Be Giants with one furry tentacle tied behind his back. In short, an evening with Hitchcock is one spent at a carnival of the musical, the mind and the madcap. Erie Choir opens at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 the day of the show. —Rick Cornell
