Playmakers Rep—Director Joseph Haj calls this account of the rivalry between composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart "the Cain and Abel story, transplanted to the court of Vienna during the 1700s." Peter Shaffer's Tony-winning 1980 play (and the Oscar-winning film that followed) discloses the spiritually devout, musically inferior Salieri's anger at God and fall from grace in response to Mozart's irreligious brilliance. Did Salieri murder Mozart? Or did God kill Mozart to prevent him from co-opting the smallest bit of his genius? Ray Dooley's work here as Salieri may hold the answers. The play runs through April 20.
