The Passenger
N.C. State Campus Cinema—With our country's ever-growing landscape of asphalt highways, byways and bridges, it seems completely natural to classify the "road film" as an intrinsically American brand of cinema. But the pedal-to-metal cinema isn't the sole property of Hollywood. As we'll learn in the new film series "European Directors in Transit," many great European directors were drawn to the road film: According to N.C. State film professor Devin Orgeron, they were "almost obsessively drawn to the location of the road and the idea of mobility."

Orgeron, author of the just-published Road Film: From Muybridge and Méliès to Lynch and Kiarostami, has organized (along with his colleague Joe Gomez) "...European directors in transit...," a sampler of notable Euro-road films. The series kicks off tonight with a new 35 mm print of Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's mysterious The Passenger, from 1973 and starring Jack Nicholson. Later films in the series include the Finnish Aki Kaurismäki's Ariel, the German Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas and the Greek Theo Angelopoulos' The Weeping Meadow. The film screens at 7 p.m. for free. Be sure and hit the road early to catch NCSU Film Studies Director Marsha Orgeron's introductory notes. For more info, visit —Kathy Justice
