Raleigh
Ella Baker Speaking Tour
Talley Ballroom, N.C. State Campus—Civil rights activist Ella Baker left an indelible mark on the landscape of the Carolinas during her lifetime. Baker, a former student at Shaw University, was drawn back to the Tar Heel State in the early 1960s when she heard about the Woolworth sit-in led by students of N.C. A&T University. Inspired by the new student activists, Baker organized protests inspired by the Ghandian theory of nonviolent direct action. This group, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, stood at the forefront of the battle for civil rights and organized the famous region-wide freedom rides of the 1960s. Baker died in 1986, but you can hear the voices and see the faces of the people who stood beside her in the battle for equal rights at this evening's lecture. Come join in the conversation and continue the spirit of activism at 7 p.m. for free. —Kathy Justice
