Chapel Hill
The Whigs, The Sammies, Bull City
Local 506—Coming out of Athens, Ga., The Whigs has been praised for an unpretentious approach to unpolished rock since its 2006 debut, Give 'Em a Big Fat Lip. This month's Mission Control keeps that rock rolling, epitomized by a song's chorus that screams, "I don't care what your old man thinks of me/ Cuz I don't care, I'm already young." Indeed, their emphasis is on not caring, and this band has streamlined its sound to get rid of any trace of complexity, which pays off here better than expected. Along the same ideological lines, North Carolina rockers The Sammies and Bull City open. Good bill. Pay $8 for a 9 p.m. start. —Margaret Hair

Pittsboro
Rita Mae Brown's The Purrfect Murder
McIntyre's Fine Books—Emmy-nominated screenwriter and author Rita Mae Brown will be at McIntyre's tonight at 7 p.m. to read from her latest Sneaky Pie Brown mystery The Purrfect Murder. The event is free, but donations will benefit CARE: Chatham Animal Rescue and Education. For more info, visit www.fearrington.com/village/calendar.asp or call 542-3030. —Megan Stein
