Jasper Johns: Pre-Pop or Neo-Dada
Animation and Fine Art Galleries—It's startling to realize that while the likes of Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg have passed from the earth, Jasper Johns is not only still alive, but still only in his 70s. Johns is one of the icons of the 1950s art heyday that saw Abstract Expressionism give way to Pop. His lasting fame is due to "Flag," his 1954 rendering of the American flag on plywood, in a piece that showed how short a distance it would be from Dadaism to the Pop that would define the 1960s. While some of his work has been purchased for tens of millions of dollars by hedge funds (which now may be facing the need to liquidate their art collections), a half-dozen Johns pieces from the 1970s and '80s are on view and for sale at Animation and Fine Art Galleries. Those who could use art in the middle of holiday shopping may want to pop into this University Mall store. And shopping is a possibility, too: In what could be a sign of the times, the Johns artworks are available for purchase on layaway plans. The exhibit will be up through Dec. 31.
