Secondhand Freespace: The Producers
Local 506—After discussions about publicity and booking, the third installment of Local 506's series of panels on the music business now moves into the business of making music by inviting producers to the stage. Not that this particularly impressive round of experts hasn't seen the stage before: Aside from recording bands from Ryan Adams and Roman Candle to Yo La Tengo and Ben Folds Five, Chris Stamey has recorded as the dB's, The Sneakers, under his own name and in various experimental guises. Mitch Easter made R.E.M.'s Murmur and Pavement's Brighten the Corners, but he's been the sole constant member of Let's Active since 1981. Rick Miller led those early Sleazefests at the 506 as Southern Culture on the Skids' frontman, but he's also cut tunes by The Fleshtones and Dexter Romweber. And Nick Petersen, who gigs these days in Monsonia, has captured perhaps more of the Triangle's sounds than anyone else over the last decade at his Track & Field Studio (R.I.P.). The discussion and question-and-answer session will be moderated by Jim Brantley, the Ashley Stove and Bull City member who contributed heavily to The Rosebuds' latest, Life Like. Shop talk begins at 7:30 p.m., and there's no cover. —Grayson Currin
