Little Dragon, Motor Skills

Local 506—If Swedish quartet Little Dragon seems to be an exercise in restraint—and it's true that the electro-pop ballads never grow too schmaltzy, and the upbeat numbers never indulge in a sugar buzz—they've got good reason to pull the reins: Swedish-Japanese frontwoman Yukumi Nagano sports one of the most possessing voices in pop music. Dynamic and rich like that of Cocteau Twin Liz Frazer but eternally cool and controlled like that of Fever Ray/ The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson, Nagano politely dominates most everything else within earshot or eyeshot when she sings. So if you're hoping "Never Never" opens up into some electronic catharsis or that "Blinking Pigs" would really drop the beat, give it a second: She's about to sing again. Motor Skills—a Raleigh duo that goes for it as a matter of necessity, whether that means rap-party blasts or reflective anthems—opens, along with Wilmington's Lands of Wonder. The $8-$10 show starts at 9 p.m. See www.local506.com. —Grayson Currin
