Messiah

Memorial Auditorium, Progress Energy Center—Starting today, the Carolina Ballet will praise glory to the rafters with this year's Messiah production, a reprise of its own interpretation that premiered in December 1998. Choreographed by company artistic director Robert Weiss, this version focuses on the first act of George Frideric Handel's opus, which concerns Christmas and the advent season. It was Weiss' first piece for the company and quickly became the most successful. The show came back better than ever last year after a half-decade hiatus, during which Weiss took the production to Hungary. North Carolina Master Chorale will provide live musical accompaniment as the dancers depict notable events in Christ's life. Don't put off seeing this performance until next year, because after closing night, this piece is going (as those Disney commercials say) back into the vault for several years. The show runs today and Nov. 27-29, with evening performances at 8 and weekend matinees at 2. Visit www.progressenergycenter.com and www.carolinaballet.com. —Sarah Ewald
