The Monster Squad

Colony Theater—Three words: "Wolfman's got nards!" As Where the Wild Things Are restores a bit of edge and scariness to children's films, the Colony Theater has one of the movies that proved a subversive, "I can't believe I'm watching this" treat for a generation of kids with VCRs and cable in the 1980s. Yes, it's The Monster Squad, about a group of young kids who must take on an army of monsters, including Dracula, the Wolfman, the Creature From the Black Lagoon (well, "Gil Man," anyway), the Mummy and a kindly Frankenstein monster prone to saying "BO...GUS." It's not trauma-inducing, but the kids are allowed to swear and blow things up and are placed in real danger. Giving this screening an added edge is a special guest appearance by its star, local resident Andre Gower. A former child actor, Gower worked on almost every major TV show of the 1980s (from Knight Rider to T.J. Hooker) and often travels around the country introducing screenings of the Squad. The evening is part of the Colony's Cinema Overdrive series, and tickets are a mere $5. Take your kids—they gotta grow up sometime. For more information, call 847-5677 or visit —Zack Smith
