Wake in Fright

When: Fri., Nov. 23 2012

For hardcore cinephiles, the only thing more thrilling than a great new film is when a potential lost classic resurfaces. Wake in Fright is a 1971 Australian thriller based on a longtime bestseller about a schoolteacher posted in the outback who finds himself stuck in a terrifyingly savage town while attempting to take a trip home. The film played Cannes in its initial release and got great reviews but spent the intervening decades unavailable on VHS, DVD or even on television. Reasons vary, though the uncompromising violence (footage from a real kangaroo hunt is used) hit close to home for many, especially those in Australia. Negatives usable for restoration and DVD transfer were finally found by the film's original editor in Pittsburgh in a container marked "For Destruction" in 2004, and in 2009, a restored print picked by Martin Scorsese became only the second film to play Cannes twice. Now you can see Wake in Fright yourself for one week only at the Carolina—and to see if it's as unsettling today as it was back then. —Zack Smith
