Cultured, refined women who sell themselves have been objects of fascination in cinema practically since the medium was invented. Mirza Hadi Ruswa's Umrao Jaan Ada, published in 1905, was first made into a movie in 1981 and then again in a 2006 incarnation directed by J.P. Dutta. As the title character, the formidably beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan charms her way into the heart of Abhishek Bachchan's Nawab Sultan (in real life, the two actors are married and known to fans as "Abi-Ash"). After Nawab is disowned by his family for the forbidden love, Umrao tangles with other men and eventually makes her way back to the city of her childhood. The free 6:30 p.m. screening is sponsored by the UNC Department of Asian Studies Hindi-Urdu Section, Carolina Asia Center and the Consortium for South Asia Studies, and co-sponsored by Geet Bazaar. —Sarah Ewald
