Ty Segall, Ex Cult, Gross Ghost

When: Wed., Jan. 30, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $12-14

In a Pitchfork story published late last year, Ty Segall gave reporter Aaron Leitko the quote of journalists' dreams: "There are all these kids who are growing up on Skrillex and all this digital music," the 25-year-old garage rock star said. "What are those kids gonna think when they hear rock 'n' roll?" If 2012 was the year that rockism—that music-wonk pejorative—seemed to finally crumble beneath the weight of powerful new releases from the likes of R&B crooner Frank Ocean, rap wunderkind Kendrick Lamar and veteran singer-songwriter Fiona Apple (#1-3 on The Village Voice "Pazz & Jop" critics' poll), Segall was the compelling counter-argument. In 2012, he released three (!) albums of superlative quality: Hair, a collaboration with fellow San Franciscan White Fence, was a slab of playful psychedelics; the full-band Slaughterhouse married Oblivians fuzz bombs to a heavy Black Sabbath groove; and Twins, Segall's solo outing for the year, did all that, with an extra dose of Paul McCartney's pop smarts and Kurt Cobain's oblique immediacy. Somehow he also found time to produce the great self-titled debut of Memphis' Ex-Cult who, with local favorites Gross Ghost, open this unmissable gig. —Bryan Reed
