Blending strains of dream pop with the durable melodicism of indie pop, last year's Twin Tigers debut, Gray Waves, earned plenty of critical genuflection. The album drifts on droning guitars, intermittently interrupted by slashes of discord and feedback meant to complement frontman Matthew Rains' narcotized voice. His reverberating baritone recalls Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen), though it's not quite as arch. Despite the recent prevalence of shimmering, distortion-laden psych acts, this Athens quartet sounds fresh thanks to sturdy hooks woven into thick washes of guitar.
