Twilight Wolf Howl

When: Wed., Oct. 17, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: $12-15

Last summer I spoke with best-selling author Maggie Stiefvater (The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy) about her research into wolves, and she described an experience in which a professional trainer had a wolf howl on cue for her: "Every single wolf around him, I mean dozens of them sitting near me, all threw their heads back and howled at once. And the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, because it was just a deep, primeval response to these wolves. It's so familiar to us, and yet so alien." If you want to get an idea of what she experienced, check out this special evening to learn all about wild red wolves and the efforts to save the species from extinction. There'll be snacks, a nature walk, real wolf pelts and bones, and a presentation from Red Wolf Coalition Executive Director Kim Wheeler. And, of course, some wolves that may, with coaxing, howl for you. The event costs $15 ($12 for children) and starts at 6 p.m. —Zack Smith
