Chapel Hill
Frightened Rabbit
Local 506—For about two years, Glasgow's Frightened Rabbit has been riding a steady wave of they're-next prophecy, and one has to hope it's finally time: The trio's fantastic debut, Sings the Greys, was reissued in October, and its current tour puts them in big houses supporting Pinback. But if they fail, we still got "The Greys," one of the most enthralling three minutes of indie rock for guitar you'll ever hear. All stop-time, big-gesture trickery amid vocals that refuse to take off, "The Greys" turns city life into desolation row. With Hundred Air at 9:15 p.m. for $8. —Grayson Currin

Durham
Peter Thomson
The Regulator Bookshop—Environmental journalist Peter Thomson will be at the Regulator Bookshop to discuss and sign copies of his new work Sacred Sea: A Journey to Lake Baikal. Thomson set out to explore the largest and deepest body of fresh water in the world, which holds mythical status as a purportedly pure ecosystem. His six-month pilgrimage to the evolutionary cauldron, which springs from a crack in the Siberian plateau, inspired a book mixed with introspection and environmental reporting. The event starts at 7 p.m. Call 286-2700 or visit www.regbook.com for more information. —Ashley Roberts
