RALEIGH
SLAID CLEAVES
HIDEAWAY BBQ—Though Slaid Cleaves is ostensibly an Americana artist, his dusty, sunbaked tunes about sad, desperate characters have a wonderful moody grace that suggests the Scud Mt. Boys if they'd allowed Joe Pernice into his chamber pop realm. The timbre of his soft-spoken voice recalls Mason Jennings, and he routinely strips his characters of everything they have, offering only the solace of an easy delivery that whispers, "Shhh, it's just the way of the world." Powerful stuff. 12-$15/ 8 p.m. —Chris Parker
