The Great Debaters
  • The Great Debaters

A THEATER NEAR YOU-- If the tree crashes to the floor and Santa's sleigh falls through the roof, the local multiplex might provide the perfect haven. Although it hasn't received the hype of other holiday films, the Denzel Washington-helmed The Great Debaters is a film that boasts an enticing local connection: There's a cameo from Durham's African-American string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops should make the film worthwhile, at the very least. And word has it the band has a song on the soundtrack, too. —Kathy Justice

THE POUR HOUSE—It's as much a yule tradition as a fruitcake, but way more welcome. Terry Anderson, along with pals from the Olympic Ass Kickin Team and elsewhere, will rock Christmas Day in celebration of Anderson's birthday. But this year there'll be shadings of a blue Christmas, especially when the gang launches into "Cat Out of the Bag," "I Don't Want Her (Anymore)" or another tune written by Anderson's late bandmate and birthdate-sharer, David Enloe. Sports Alternative and Monte Warren open. Tickets are $5, and the music starts at 8 p.m. —Rick Cornell
