  • Reform, Reconstruction and Redemption

Chapel Hill
UNC CAMPUSReform, Reconstruction and Redemption, an exhibit currently on display at Wilson Library, is a look at the tense, though often beneficial, relationship between the United States' northern and southern halves. Laura Brown, the exhibit's curator, describes it as "a broad look at the way the North has repeatedly attempted to change things in the South—often for the better—and an impulse to perceive the South as very much in need of saving." The free exhibit closes on Aug. 31. For more information, visit www.lib.unc.edu/spotlight/northernimpulse.html or call 962-1345.—Megan Stein

CARRBORO CYBRARY—Chapel Hill authors Patricia Bryan and Tom Wolf are, respectively, professor of law at UNC and a medical writer. Together they've researched and written a true-crime narrative called Midnight Assassin: A Murder in America's Heartland. Their just-published book tells not merely of a now forgotten but horrific murder in 1900 Iowa, but also a tale of domestic violence and the emerging recognition of women's rights. Furthermore, the authors use their scholarly training to analyze primary sources, including trenchant, contemporary coverage by pioneering journalist Susan Glaspell. Tonight, they will read from the book at 7 p.m. Call 918-7387 or visit www.co.orange.nc.us/library/cybrary for more info. —David Fellerath
