Raleigh
Stanton Moore Trio
The Pour House—Drummer Stanton Moore is a founding and current member of New Orleans funk-and-brass recontextualizers Galactic, but that's only one prominent bullet point on his résumé: Longtime friends with fellow New Orleans native Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan, Moore's played with C.O.C., rapper Juvenile and titans like Irma Thomas and Preservation Jazz Hall Band. Unsurprisingly, he can be boisterous and fiery (listen for the metal flakes on "Proper Gander") or subdued and proper (listen for the taste and delicacy of his patterns on "Water from an Ancient Well"). Tonight, he tours in trio form with keyboardist Robert Walter and guitarist Will Bernard. Expect a panoply of styles, united by one of the country's most excellent rhythm men. Funkuponya starts the $12-$15 show at 9 p.m. —Grayson Currin

Chapel Hill
David Brooks vs. E.J. Dionne
UNC's Memorial Hall—Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks and left-leaning Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne go head-to-head in a discussion of the 2008 presidential campaign. UNC public policy professor Hodding Carter III, a well-respected political observer in his own right, moderates. The visiting pundits join UNC this year as Frey Foundation lecturers—the same series that in the past has brought in Harry Belafonte and Ted Turner. This year's election-oriented program includes a Q&A. The event is free and open to the public (though you might have to pay to park). It starts at 7 p.m. —Fiona Morgan
