Carrboro
Ingrid Michaelson
Cat's Cradle—Staten Island girl Ingrid Michaelson's airy and acoustic rhythms seem custom fit for the broken-hearted, just like her quirky tune "The Way I Am," about buying Rogaine for a lover gone bald, fit perfectly into the argyle-sweater parade on Old Navy's fall commercial last year. Michaelson's tunes have also landed on Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill. TV plugs aside, this singer-songwriter brings a certain geek-chic to her folk-pop tunes, working her way from mellow piano balladry to full-bodied folk with enough style and irony to guarantee smooth isn't exactly snoozy. Catch her tonight with Greg Laswell at 9 p.m. for $15-$17. —Kathy Justice

Chapel Hill
June Star
The Cave—June Star is a block off the old Bakersfield shitkick—raspy, heel-shuffling honky-tonk exiles with hands turning the wheel between rock swerve and parched twang. Residing somewhere between Lucero and the Jayhawks, June Star frontman Andrew Grimm caresses no-frills songs soaked in Southern gothic and longing. His creaky backwoods baritone settles easily into the traditional sound, which embraces country-western and folk while keeping a foot in rootsy rock. The band's latest, Cora Belle, is the fifth of its 10-year tenure, telling tales of a small, fictional town populated with unsatisfied, dissolute people looking for a way out. Pay $5 at 10 p.m. —Chris Parker

Chapel Hill
Grand Archives
Local 506—Formed two years ago by ex-Carissa's Weird/ Band of Horses guitarist Mat Brooke, the quintet echoes Carissa's folk-rock baroque, but its sunny, soaring harmonies and glimmering lilt more often suggests The Mamas & The Papas or Crosby, Stills & Nash. While the tone approaches twee, the rhythm section's supple, chewy undertow prevents the delicate melodies from floating away. With Sera Cahoon at 9:30 p.m. for $10. —Chris Parker
