Raleigh
The Wizard of Oz
Memorial Auditorium, Progress Energy Center—Some years ago, Michael Ondaatje published a fascinating book called The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing. The dialogue between Ondaatje, the author of The English Patient, and Murch, the film and sound editor responsible for such classics as The Conversation, Apocalypse Now and the restoration of Touch of Evil, runs far and wide, but it returns often to one of Murch's obsessions: the wild, desolate and radical climate of late-19th century Kansas conjured by the author L. Frank Baum, who would transmute it into his series of Oz books. It's been more than a century since Baum hit the jackpot with those books, and modern viewers have no inkling about such things as the prairie Populist movement, wildcat strikes, anti-railroad agitation and fights over the gold and silver standards. Instead, we're left with an imperishable MGM film with Judy Garland and company, and it's this version that inspires the musical. Beginning tonight and continuing through Sunday, May 10, this traveling production alights upon the Memorial stage. Visit broadwayseriessouth.com. —David Fellerath
