Jewbilly

Open Eye Café—Anya Liftig's parents met in the Peace Corps in the 1960s. Her mother was from Eastern Kentucky; her father was from West Hartford, Conn. As a child, in her words, "My school year was spent in a posh suburb of New York City rubbing elbows with the offspring of captains of industry and commerce while my summers were spent with my much extended Kentucky family (62 double-second cousins) in the holler." Hear Liftig's tale of her strange childhood when she performs a staged reading of her tragicomic one-woman show, Jewbilly, tonight at 8. The show runs about one hour and five minutes. Durham
Public Nudity Songwriters Night

Broad Street Cafe—A trifecta of talented performers shape the premiere of this local songwriters series, hosted by Greg Humphreys (Dillon Fence, Hobex). Humphreys' own solo material favors a pretty, folk-flavored vein reminiscent of Dillon Fence, with noteworthy exceptions like the bluesy "Natural Child." A bit more twang and rustic dust creep into Jonathan Byrd's road-worn paeans, though he's not averse to hot-footed boogie or low-key jangle, either. And jangle pop is the preferred idiom of the dB's co-leader Peter Holsapple. The free show starts at 8 p.m. See www.thebroadstreetcafe.com. —Chris Parker

Raleigh
Ruthless, The Musical

Jones Auditorium, Meredith College—Tina Denmark has a problem. The 8-year-old budding thespian knows she's born to tread the boards, and most especially she's meant for the title role in her school's musical production of Pippi Longstocking. Like any reality-show contestant, she'll pull out all the stops to get what she wants. Free for all ages, the show runs today through Oct. 31, with performances at 8 p.m. The sole matinee occurs at 3 p.m. Nov. 1. See www.meredith.edu. —Sarah Ewald
