Chapel Hill
The Weight
The Cave—Named for the canonical tune of quintet heroes The Band, Los Angeles five-piece The Weight comes closer to the thin piano-pop of its namesake's later work than the rough-hewn roots of those seminal early works. That is, don't expect the itinerant weirdness or nostalgic glory The Band mastered so much as tender love songs, alternately lust-bouncy and love-burdened. Do expect an interesting backstory: Like The Band, The Weight came together as a backing unit, originally supporting Triangle native Joe Firstman before moving on to stints with Kelly Clarkson and Ludacris. Former guitarist Carl Broemel now plays with My Morning Jacket. Indeed, for what these songs sometimes lack in character, they counter with radio-ready playing precision. The band plays at 10 p.m. —Grayson Currin

Raleigh
JJ Grey & Mofro
Lincoln Theatre—JJ Grey is from Florida, and he'll remind you of that fact several times throughout this show. But even if he didn't tell you, you'd probably know—Grey's affinity for his homeland shines through in his musings on the Southern way of life. Horn- and Hammond-heavy, the swamp-funk of his band Mofro is greasy and filling, just like the soul food it extols in "Ho Cake." Opener Hill Country Revue is the side project created by North Mississippi Allstars Cody Dickinson and Chris Chew, presumably to occupy their time while frontman Luther Dickinson plays with Black Crowes. While the duo loses some octane without Luther, it comes close, right down to the use of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside songbooks for 2008 blues jams. Tickets are $14-$17 for an 8 p.m. start. —Spencer Griffith
