If you've ever tilted your head back to look up at a skyscraper, you've gazed with wonder at the most celebrated facet of Louis Sullivan's architectural legacy. The documentary film Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture presents the life of the Chicago architect who came to be called the father of the skyscraper and exerted a huge influence on Frank Lloyd Wright. Seeded by his belief in design as a social value, Sullivan's bold, heroic forms kicked open the Modernist door that Wright stomped through, though Sullivan's attachment to Romantic ornamentation kept him perpetually loitering in that doorway. The Nowell's Architecture Movie Series is organized by Triangle Modernist Houses, a nonprofit that documents, preserves and promotes Modernist residential architecture. You might have missed films on Rem Koolhaas and the Beijing National Stadium, but the series continues through March and includes films on Norman Foster and Philip Johnson, as well as a tour of younger American designer/builders. —Chris Vitiello
