Even though it's 55 years old, Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, starring the director himself as the corrupt police captain of a Mexican border town who gets locked in a battle of wills with a Mexican drug enforcement officer (Charlton Heston) during a murder investigation, is still one badass piece of pulp. Shot in black and white, Touch of Evil—an attempt by the Citizen Kane director to see if he could make a great movie out of a bad B-movie script—is one of the most influential and oft-referenced film noirs ever made. Its legendary opening scene, a three-minute tracking shot, has been re-created and replicated by such biggies as De Palma, Scorsese and Altman. Now comes the question of which version audience members will be seeing: There's the 1958 theatrical release, the longer cut released in 1976, and the one released in 1998, in which famed editor Walter Murch restored edits Welles wanted after Universal planned to issue the cut the studio made. Whichever take you get, you're in for one down-and-dirty night at the movies. NCMA film curator and INDY Week contributor Laura Boyes will introduce the film, which starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7, or $5 for museum members and students. —Craig D. Lindsey
