John Brown's assault on the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Va., in October 1859 was a spectacular failure. It was so spectacular that, as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tony Horwitz ably tells it in Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War, Brown's fervent belief that blood needed to be shed to atone for our sin of slavery was soon realized. Northern abolitionists made Brown into a martyr. Southern secessionists saw his martyrdom as proof that the slave states must leave the Union. Was Brown a saint? Insane? Brilliant? An admiring John Wilkes Booth, one of the 1,500 soldiers who stood watch as an unflinching Brown was hanged, later said that Brown was "a man inspired, the grandest character of this century."
