There is no greater chronicle of existential despair than the daily saga of the helpless souls in Tom Batiuk's newspaper comic strip Funky Winkerbean, an unending infliction of miseries that, as Variety once wrote of Harold and Maude, "offers all the gaiety of a burning orphanage." Until it was recently shuttered by AOL, the website Comics Alliance kept a monthly tally on the hellish lives of the inhabitants of Winkerbean and its spinoff Crankshaft, from the encroaching senility of the former high school principal to Les Moore's efforts to get a movie produced about his late wife Lisa's death from cancer (which occurred after she was nearly killed by a bomber and finally tracked down the son she gave up for adoption). Now, efforts are being made to chronologically preserve this darkness from the early days when it was just a simple gag-a-day strip about a high school with jokes about band practice and rope climbing, before two different time-jumps turned it into a silent howl of despair at an unforgiving universe. Experience the more innocent times when Tom Batiuk visits Chapel Hill Comics, and possibly take the opportunity to confront him. —Zack Smith
