Evgenia Arbugaeva was born in 1985 on Siberia's northern coast, in Tiksi, Russia. Her family moved when she was 8 years old, as the Soviet Union broke up, and she always wondered about her memories of the place as a magical, natural playground. Arbugaeva revisited Tiksi and opens this show of her photographs as part of her fall residency at Duke. The uncanny light in every image is reason enough to see the show, whether it's in a shot of playground equipment on snowbound tundra beneath the constellation Orion, the green curls of the aurora borealis over an intersection or the blinding ice around a ship graveyard. Arbugaeva captures her permanent wonder at the light and the landscape, including something of a look into daily life in this unimaginable place. The Magnum Foundation supported the completion of the Tiksi series, which landed Arbugaeva on the annual Photo District News "30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch" list as well as winning her a Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
