RALEIGH

DIVINE INTERVENTION

D.H. Hill Library--Several acclaimed Palestinian films surfaced in the last several years. Paradise Now was the object of protests on the eve of the Oscars, but the Academy steered clear of giving that martyrdom thriller the big prize. Two other top films, Rana's Wedding and Divine Intervention, featured lovers separated by checkpoints. Only one opens with the murder of Santa Claus. Yes, divine intervention. Elia Suleiman's elliptical comedy wobbles between whimsy, sadness and anger, and it's at NCSU's Erdahl Cloyd Theater at 7 p.m. --David Fellerath

CHAPEL HILL

CASIOTONE FOR THE PAINFULLY ALONE

NIGHTLIGHT--Sure, Owen Ashworth ain't no Leonard Cohen, but when he picked up a battery-operated keyboard in 1997 and started committing his sullen synth pop to 4-track under the Casiotone name, his misanthropy and misery were pretty damn palpable. Couple years and hand-made demos later, Tomlab took a liking to his two-minute heartbreak blueprint and wry-but-affecting lyrics. These days he's kicked the dinky keyboard and expanded his sound for his near-lush Etiquette. The tears stream at 10 p.m. for $5. --Robbie Mackey
