Ms. Films Festival
Durham Arts Council--The fifth annual Ms. Films Festival (Feb. 23-26) focuses on "Activism Through Media" with a series of media panels and workshops to empower expression by women. Besty Greer, for instance, hosts a workshop on "craftivism," while Amanda Larson leads an intensive discussion of stop-motion animation. Perhaps most alluring is Pat Doyen's workshop to "brainstorm ways you can use specific footage and mobile devices (camera phones, iPods) as subversive tools in radical action." And, oh yeah, there are films: From a spotlight on Indian women filmmakers to submission-based screenings by women from St. Paul to San Francisco, there's something for everyone. See www.msfilms.org.

Chatham County Luau

Blue Bayou Club--Call it country twang with a whiskey back wash. Taz Halloween and members of her Johnny Cash tribute band Kitty Box & the Johnnys gather on John's birthday (hers and band member Stu Cole's, too) to scarf up spam kabobs, hawg parts and kitty litter cake. It's a themed costume shindig—the dress code is Gilligan's Island meets The Beverly Hillbillies. —Grant Britt
