CURATOR'S CONVENTION

NASHER MUSEUM--The idea of using the medium of video as art has been around since the mid-1960s, when the introduction of low-cost videotape equipment spawned creativity in the average consumer. Yet, video as high art gained slow popularity among museums and curators, who were wary of the role technology played in the artistic world. Here, Trevor Schoonmaker, the Nasher Museum's new curator of contemporary art, and Mark Coetzee, director and curator of The Rubell Family Collection in Miami, come together to discuss the importance of video as a contemporary art form and rehash its humble beginnings. The lecture's free and starts at 5:30 p.m. --Kathy Justice

Hillsborough

MARK WEEMS & THE CAVE DWELLERS

100 NORTH CHURTON--It's 6 p.m. in downtown Hillsborough—aka, Historical Plaquesville—and some outdoor music would hit the spot. Enter Mark Weems, his band the Cave Dwellers, and plenty of straight-up traditional country and honky-tonk. Actually, we're lucky that Weems could find the time: He's also a member of the old-time-leaning Stillhouse Bottom Band, and, if his work on last year's Foolish Lover's Waltz with Alice Gerrard is any indication, he's an in-demand duet partner. Pack a lawn chair, and follow the tunes to Waterfall Park and the parking lot behind the 100 block of North Churton Street. --Rick Cornell
