The Lovell Sisters

Berkeley Cafe—The Lovell Sisters display the unbridled passion of youth in their music. Jessica (23, fiddle), Megan (20, dobro) and Rebecca (18, mandolin) combine folk and bluegrass roots with strong melodies and brassy lyrics. Songs burst forward, excited and insistent. The sisters have a lot more than just pep, though. Rebecca became the youngest winner of MerleFest's mandolin contest in 2006, and the group has won several songwriting competitions. Their sound is completed with a backing of guitar and bass, and their vocal harmonies are tight and soulful. And there's still so much potential. To wit, on "Time to Grow," the sisters sing, "I don't know where I'm going to go, but that don't mean I should stay/ I keep these boots a-walking 'til I reach my grave." Pay $10 at 8 p.m. Visit www.berkeleycafe.net. —Andrew Ritchey
