Pittsboro
Joanna Catherine Scott
McIntyre's Fine Books—Chapel Hill author Joanna Catherine Scott wrote her first book, a collection of oral histories of Indo-Chinese refugees in the Philippines, after two year's research undertaken during breaks from her job working for FEMA. Influenced by the refugees' struggles for freedom, Scott has since sought out other true stories from "voiceless" people, including the story of a slave from Chapel Hill and the story of the birth mother of Scott's three adopted Korean children. Joined by the Carrboro poetry group Black Socks, Scott will read poems of loss through drunk driving from her book Night Huntress. The event begins at 7 p.m. Visit www.fearrington.com/village or call 542-3030 for more info. —Megan Stein

Raleigh
Peter Case
Berkeley Cafe—Want proof of the high regard in which singer/ songwriter/ All-American troubadour Peter Case is held in the musicians' community? How about three discs' worth? The A Case for Case tribute set released in 2006 featured almost 50 of Case's peers and followers recording his songs. Among them were some of the finest songwriters of several generations, from John Prine, Dave Alvin and Case's ex-wife Victoria Williams to James McMurtry, Richard Buckner and Todd Snider. It was a regular Who's Who. If you've never seen Peter Case perform, get out to this 8 p.m. show to see why he's earned this level of respect. Joe Ely, Tom Russell and Chuck Prophet would be there if they could. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. —Rick Cornell
