Durham
Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos
American Tobacco Campus—American Tobacco kicks off this year's Music on the Lawn concert series—co-presented by WUNC 91.5 FM—with the funky swamp blues of Mel Melton & the Wicked Mojos. Melton, the bandleader and Papa Mojo's proprietor, plies Cajun flavors as both singer and chef, having collaborated with Sonny Landreth and C.J. Chenier as Bayou Rhythm while working in Lafayette, La., restaurants. Guitarist Max Drake (Skeeter Brandon, Big Bill Morganfield) adds flair over the thick bass of T.A. James (Carey Bell), while Melton adds harp and washboard. Grab a taste of Nawlins atop some Durham grass when the free show starts at 6 p.m. —Spencer Griffith

Raleigh
Goner
The Brewery—Rock 'n' roll unfortunately can be a young man's game. This is not lost on Goner, a trio of over-30 rockers whose resignation to youth passed is the deliciously bitter aftertaste of its energetic power pop. Intertwining acerbic punk with ebullient keys, Goner and its jotted-it-all-in-a-notebook spokesman, Scott Phillips, plays like every last hurrah ought to: painfully aware of the harsh realities waiting outside, but defiantly refusing to greet them without a fight. Nathan Oliver, River City Ransom, Clothing and Shoes and Winston-Salem's Jews and Catholics fill the five-part bill. Seven bucks gets you in at 9 p.m. —Bryan Reed
