Carrboro
Chris Hillman & Herb Pederson
The Artscenter—You'd be hard-pressed to overstate Chris Hillman's influence on country rock. He helped start the Byrds and guided the band toward country rock when Gram Parsons joined for 1967's Sweetheart of the Radio. His subsequent bands—The Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, Souther-Hillman-Fury Band, Desert Rose Band—explore the shape and contours of country along its rock, folk and bluegrass borders. During the half-dozen years bookending the late '80s and early '90s, his Desert Rose Band charted several singles, offering Hillman his greatest commercial success since the Byrds. Hillman's more recent albums have been preoccupied with traditional country, bluegrass and gospel, usually with DRB bandmate Herb Pederson by his side. After all, he's a skilled guitarist, though his first love is the mandolin. At 63, his reedy tenor still sounds good. Shannon Whitworth opens. Pay $22-$25 at 8 p.m. —Chris Parker

Raleigh
Wake County Public Library Used Book Sale
Old Super Kmart, New Bern Avenue—I recently got rid of a couple hundred books for a move, which means the Wake County Public Library Used Book Sale is being held at a spectacularly lousy time. Sure, there are library sales in the Triangle throughout the year, but none can hold a candle to the massive selection of this annual event that, for the third year in a row, fills up the former Super Kmart at 4121 New Bern Ave. in Raleigh. And by "fills," I mean every inch of the former big-box store is covered with tables, each covered with hundreds of books organized by genre. Whether you want to give your dad a dozen Elmore Leonard novels for Christmas, or just have a few rarities you've been looking for, the sale gives you the opportunity to impulse-buy literature to your heart's content, and to use up your ever-decreasing shelf space. And with an expected 350,000 books at this year's sale, you're bound to find something you're looking for. The sale begins Wednesday, Nov. 19, and continues through Sunday, with hours varying from day to day. For more information, visit www.wakegov.com/libraries/events/booksale/booksale.htm. —Zack Smith
