Gifted teenagers can pull off an amazing full-scale production of The Who's Tommy. I saw it when an award-winning Riverside High School drama program nailed the rock opera 12 years ago in Durham.
But then, they had a couple of months to mount the show. The students at the NC Theatre Conservatory have been working on their version since July 16 in an intensive musical theater boot camp called the Master Summer Theatre Arts School. Still, given that the conservatory provides professional-grade training to young artists destined for larger stages, this should be anything but your average youth theater production.
NC Theatre veteran Tito Hernandez (Evita, Dames at Sea) directs and choreographs; Julie Bradley provides musical direction. Your chance to catch a rising star begins Friday at 8 p.m., with additional shows Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The studios are at 3043 Barrow Drive; tickets are $15 at 919-855-0015. — Byron Woods
