The Wailin' Jennys

When: Thu., April 15, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $28-30

Gaining popularity through regular performances on A Prairie Home Companion, The Wailin' Jennys bring beautiful vocal harmonies to traditional and original folk songs. Though there's no actual Jennifer involved, the Canadian trio of guitar, banjo and bass provides a refuge from a hectic world with its intimate lullabies and confessions. The band's latest, Live at The Mauch Chunk Opera House, recorded at a 19th-century vaudeville theater in Pennsylvania, showcases the ease with which they command a room using melodies inspired by bluegrass, blues and pop. Songs settle into the floorboards of the theater as sideman Jeremy Penner lilts higher on violin. There's a waiting list for the sold-out 8 p.m. show. —Andrew Ritchey
