The Visitor

When: Wed., Sept. 14, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $5.50

Cinema Overdrive heads into the fall season with the long cut of the 1979 film The Visitor, an Italian horror flick that heroically manages to rip off Carrie, The Omen, The Exorcist and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and even have John Huston and Sam Peckinpah in it to boot. The site www.mondo-digital.com proclaims that "this is the Mount Everest of insane '70s Italian movies," which is perhaps some of the highest praise one can offer. The short version is that there's an evil little girl descended from a deadly galactic mutant named "Sateen" (wah-wah!), who ... well, most reviewers don't seem to understand exactly what or why most of the stuff that happens in this movie happens, but it is clear that a basketball gets exploded, and this version contains a longer version of Peckinpah's scene, which required a lot of careful shooting and dubbing as he hadn't learned his lines. Also, fans were quite irate that the giant eyeball seen hovering over a mountainside on the poster never actually shows up in the film, and they were right to feel that way. Giant eyeballs improve everything. This madness is teamed with some classic trailers for a mere $5.50. —Zack Smith
