At the forefront of the third-wave ska movement, The Toasters were not only responsible for one of the genre's more memorable pop tunes ("Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down"), they were fairly eclectic, too. Vocalist-guitarist Robert Hingley is the only remaining original member—the group has gone through more than three dozen in its 30-plus years—but his signature voice ties together a catalog that veers from spiky Clash send-ups and laid-back reggae grooves to spurts of surf-inspired guitar and dancehall toasts. Fellow New York vets Mrs. Skannotto, Durham's Regatta 69 and Cary's Archbishops of Blount Street add their own ska-centric flavors. —Spencer Griffith
