One of the most visually entertaining and suspenseful new comic series of the last few years is Th3d World Studios' The Stuff of Legend, a dark variation on the likes of Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. During World War II, the son of an overseas soldier is abducted into a nightmare world when the Boogeyman emerges from his closet; his beloved toys venture in after him, setting the series into motion. The story, by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith, has some fun elements—in the Boogeyman's world, the toys are transformed, with the teddy bear becoming a massive beast and the jack-in-the-box a warrior jester—but the real star is the sepia-toned art by Charles Paul Wilson III, Michael DeVito and Jon Conkling, which renders the fantastic elements with a sense of depth and realism. Two volumes of the series, The Dark and The Jungle, are currently out and are appropriate for middle schoolers and up. The entire creative team will appear at Ultimate Comics' Farrington Road location to sign copies and do sketches; visit ultimatecomicsonline.com or call 919-401-1910 for details. —Zack Smith
